And Lovely is the Rose

Barbara Horn and
Sheila Galbraith

button.gif

And Lovely is the Rose presents a selection of 50 roses whose charm has endured over generations. These thoughtfully selected roses are available worldwide to grace any garden, large or small. Each rose has been placed in chronological order so that the history of this beloved flower can be appreciated, as well as the years of patient breeding and cultivation that have gone into creating the modern roses of today.

Among flowers, the rose is unique, as many varieties have the capacity to produce blooms for up to six months of the year in North America and Europe, and even up to nine months in warmer climates. The attribute of a long flowering period has been a consideration in the selection of roses for the book. As well as a brief note on the history and attributes of each particular rose, cultivation notes have also been included. And each rose is beautifully illustrated in an accompanying botanical painting.

Reviews

“This must have book for rose lovers features descriptions of 50 romantic old fashioned roses, each accompanied by a beautiful hand painted illustration.” Gardening Australia, March 2008

“This classic flower is one that has inspired artists and poets and is a symbol of love, joy and comfort.  Barbara Horn has selected 50 exquisite varieties and gives their history and attributes as well as notes on growing them.  Sheila Galbraith’s illustrations do each more than justice.  This charming book will make a wonderful gift ... if you can bear to part with it.” Woman's Day

“This beautifully produced book will, I am sure, grace the shelves of rose growers everywhere.  As a gift or presentation, it has an immediate charm.  Illustrated with delicate botanical drawings of each of the 50 roses included, it gives not only their history, but the breeding and cultivation which have gone into their selection.  Though nearly all are well-known varieties, it was interesting to read of the variations on their names, as the book says “Many names, one rose”.  Among the few which were new to me were Frau Karl, Druschki and Stanwell Perpetual.  No doubt others will know of them.  The local Rose Society need no longer be at a loss when searching for an appropriate raffle when And Lovely is the Rose would prove a popular and rewarding choice.” Wairarapa Times Age

“This small hard-covered book has found a permanent spot by my bedside, as both its author and illustrator have produced a lovely tribute to the rose ...  After hours of pruning, it seems to me that this book is just the tonic to help one dream of the blooms to come when late Spring arrives and to wonder whether there is room to plant that other rose which sounds and looks so special.”   Journal of Heritage Roses in Australia, Spring 2008.  Read the full review >>
